Collaboration with Jerry de Mars
2019
Jerry de Mars, film director and business owner, first came to Ukiha in 2019 as part of the photographic project Otani Nieuwenhuise in order to make a documentary film of their stay.
映画監督・起業家のジェリー・ドマーズは、2019年、写真のプロジェクトOtani Nieuwenhuise の一員として、彼らの滞在のドキュメンタリー映画を制作するために初めてうきはを訪れました。
Jerry is a philanthropist, working with the United Nations as creator of educational contents, advocating for improvement of various global issues including women’s and children’s rights, sanitary in developing countries, refugees and migrants situations, so on and so forth.
Through his innate entrepreneurship and pioneer spirit, Jerry saw the challenges that Ukiha was facing as a typical example of rural community in Japan, such as declining population, emptying houses, undermanaged forests, etc, as well as how the Artist-in-Residency ran by Ryoko single-handedly at the time, could use a bit of help.
ジェリーは、教育コンテンツのクリエーターとして国連の仕事を請け負う人道活動家です。女性や子供の権利、途上国の衛生状態、難民や移民の状況など、様々なグローバルな課題の改善のために尽力しています。
彼の起業家としての目と博愛精神により、ジェリーはうきはが直面している課題を、日本の地方コミュニティの典型的な例として捉えました。例えば、人口減少、空き家、管理されていない杉桧の森林などです。また、当時馬場が個人事業として運営していたアーティスト・イン・レジデンスプログラムにも、少し支援の余地があることも見て取ったのでした。
当時のうきはでのアーティスト・イン・レジデンス事業は、馬場の個人事業として自宅を利用して行っていました。
We didn't have an accommodation facility for artists at the time.
By the end of his stay, he had come up with various ideas to solve the situations, and one of them was to buy an old house and run it as a residency for artists.
Jerry’s suggestion planted a seed in Ryoko’s mind to have a physical base for inviting artists, which would give her and the artists more freedom to focus on their creation on their own pace.
２週間の滞在が終わる頃には、ジェリーは様々なアイデアを固めていました。そのうちの1つが、うきはに古い家を買い、アーティストのためのレジデンスとして運営することでした。
ジェリーの提案は、それまで家を購入することなど考えてもいなかった馬場にとって、アーティスト達にとっても運営者にとっても自立した自由度の高い環境を確保するためにも、物理的拠点を持つ必要があると認識するきっかけになりました。

Later that year, when Ryoko visited Jerry in Amsterdam in November, he had formed a group of friends who would be willing to join and invest in the Artist-in-Residence program in Ukiha. The plan was to set up a foundation with both Dutch and Japanese members on board, then buy a property, renovate it together as a project, and conduct exchange programs between Ukiha and cities of the Netherlands.
その年の後半、11月に馬場がアムステルダムを訪れた際、Jerryはうきはでのアーティスト・イン・レジデンス・プログラムに参加し、投資する意志のある友人のグループを既に結成していました。計画は、オランダと日本のメンバーが参加する財団を設立し、その後、うきはに物件を共同で購入し、プロジェクトとして皆で改装し、うきはとオランダの都市との交流プログラム拠点として運営することでした。二人はオランダ国内で日本との交流に関わる団体や人を訪ねてアドバイスや支援をもらうためのミーティングも重ねました。
2020
Jerry came back to Ukiha only a month later to check out the property and move the idea of founding a company, and meeting potential collaborators.
Ryoko went ahead to buy the house in March 2020.
その1ヶ月後の12月に、ジェリーは物件の最終確認と会社設立の具体的手続きや連携予定の建築家等の協力者との協議を進めるために、再度うきはを訪問しました。
これに続いて、馬場は2020年3月に物件を購入しました。
The Pandemic
Then, right after that, Covid happened. Jerry was ready to pay another visit to finalize the plan for founding a company and restoration of the house.
As we all know, the plan was suspended for the following 2 years and a half.
その直後に、パンデミックにより各国の行き来が途絶えたのです。世界の誰もが覚えている通り、その後2022年10月までの2年半、ジェリーの来日は叶いませんでした。
In retrospect, his contribution was invaluable, giving birth to the idea of the residency now we cherish and nurture as Omnicent.
Another Residency in France
At any rate, Jerry’s initial project hasn’t ceased - quite contrary, it has grown into a larger scale project, involving the new property he bought with his partner in the south of France to turn into an artists’ residence. Together with Ryoko, Jerry is working on to create a triangle network of artists’ hubs connecting Amsterdam - Valence (France) - Ukiha.
He plans to return to Ukiha soon again with the initial supporters of his project plan - artists, designers and architect friends - who are still enthusiastically involved.
We are looking forward to seeing what kind of movement Jerry's network will create with the gradually growing Omnicent.
しかし、こうして振り返ってみると、私たちが今愛を持って育てていこうとしている Omnicent レジデンスのアイデアを最初にもたらしたジェリーの貢献は計り知れません。
ジェリーの当初のアイデアは、途絶えたわけではないどころか、むしろ規模を拡大して着実に成長しています。まず、パンデミックの最中に彼はパートナーとともに南フランスに中世の古城のような建物を購入しました。ここをレジデンスプログラムの拠点として現在改装中で、プログラムを主催できるようになった暁には、アムステルダム〜ヴァランス（フランス）〜うきは の３拠点間の交流プロジェクトを立ち上げるべく、最初の賛同者だったアーティストや建築家の友人とまたうきはに戻ってくる予定です。
形の見えてきたOmnicentと、ジェリーの作るネットワークがどのようなムーブメントを生み出していくのか、私たちもコラボレーションを楽しみにしているところです。
